Scope of Course:
The target audience for this course includes, PT, PTA, OT, COTA. This seminar provides instruciton in the anatomy and physiology of the lymphatic system, the pathophysiology of lymphedema, and the management and treatment of upper and lower extremity lymphedema. Participants will be instructed in the components of Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT), including manual lymph drainage, compression bandaging, skinn care, and exercise. In addition, contraindicaitons to treatment, circumferential measurements, complicaitons of lymphedema, compression garments, and documentaiton and billing will also be discussed. Come prepared for lab.
Learning Objectives: Upon completion of this seminar, participants will be
able to:
1. Describe the basic anatomyof the lymphatic system and its relavance to treatment. 2. Describe th epathophysiology of lymphedema. 3. Describe the three stages of lymphedema. 4. Describe the 4 components of Complete Decongestive Therapy and the importance of each component. 5. Demonstrate competence with manual lymph drainage techniques of the upper and lower extremity. 6. Demonstrate competence with compression garment for maintenance of edema reduction. 7. Be able to recommend an appropriate compression garment for maintenance of edema reduction. 8. Describe both the absolute nad relative contraindicaitons to CDT treatment. 9. Document and bill appropriately for services provided.
